“Why did I travel solo to Hawaii?”

Well, if I’m being entirely honest I found a round trip ticket for $300 and because all of my friends and family are living their own lives (school, work, etc.) I decided, what the heck, I’m not going to let fear hold me back.

And maybe it didn’t turn out to be all rainbows and unicorns. Not every moment was necessarily capital F U N, but I learned that it’s okay. It’s okay to be lonely at times, to miss the presence of the ones we love and wish could be there with us. Sometimes God takes us on adventures to grow us and speak truth into our hearts that we are so desperately seeking.

Change makes me sad, whether it’s teeny tiny or life-altering. From as far back as I can remember, I have feared change. So because I’m choosing to display my true self with you, I’ll admit I cried (a lot) the first night I arrived on Oahu and found myself all alone tucked away in a desolately quiet basement on the mountainside that hadn’t seen company since summertime. All of my built up excitement from car ride to plane ride of imagining the glorious tropical memories I’d make- as a wanderlust independent adventurer, like someone who backpacks Europe by themself just for the experience- it felt snatched from me in a shear moment of loneliness.

But this really isn’t a sad story, I promise. Way more good came out of my solo trip than sadness. I believe God knows exactly what our souls need, even when we think we need something entirely different. And he filled my soul to the brim over these past five days. He said “my love, I am here with you holding your hand, always. Though you may feel alone, I will never leave you.”

He ignited my once lost passion for creating what my heart desires- capturing beauty and letting words spill onto paper (or rather a keyboard, which sounds less poetic), seeking adventure instead of staying inside, reading beautiful stories that motivate me to lead a purposeful life and best of all, he reminded me how important it is to just be.

He whispered, “slow down and just be who I created you. Why are you anxious? Why do you feel so uneasy and unloved just because you are alone? Darling, I adore every piece of you, even when you can only see flaws. You don’t need noise and “busyness” and constant calculated plans- all you need is me, so come home child.”

Because I didn’t have anyone to depend on, I felt a strong nudge to make friends wherever I went. I would say I’m definitely more introverted, so for me this was quite uncomfortable, but man did it grow me. I was able to connect with bloggers and influencers through social media more than I ever have. But even more special than that, I met a number of people just because I decided to say hi, look up from my phone and spark real conversation- whether it was at the beach, on an airplane or in a coffee shop.

Moral of the story…. Do something crazy or out of your comfort zone and just see the beauty that God brings out of it. And let’s all practice embracing our real, honest, quirky selves.

moody skincare must haves

I think my new name should be MIA Maddie because I always introduce a new post with the fact that I never post often enough.

Let’s just face it, I’m very inconsistent (but I’m working on it, I promise). Instead of boring you with life updates- I decided to dive right into what I put on my face because I know you’ve all been dying to know.

Just like every other girl I feel like I’m constantly changing it up and experimenting with beauty products, but for the most part and for a number of months, I’ve been pretty dang loyal to these skincare products.

Of course everyone has different, unique skin yada yada yada and I’m not going to bore you with the history of my skin (if you’re interested, just read the majority of my past posts).

However, I did just graduate from esthetics school (I am yet to be certified by the state, but hold your horses, I will get around to it ASAP) so these products, in my educated opinion have really helped my skin.

And if you’re new here, I have oily/combination acne prone skin (so in other words… the worst type;)). But if you’re in the same boat, don’t be discouraged, skin is just skin and ALWAYS gets better. Unless you continue to do nothing that will better it and only complain about it, then it probably will not improve- just a word of advice.

1. Facial cleanser: Eminence organic skincare clear skin probiotic cleanser

In my honest opinion, cleanser is not the most important part of the skincare routine because, think about it, you rub it on your skin for what? 30 seconds? And then you wash it off and doesn’t really penetrate deeper than the first layer of epidermis. So yeah, I like this one, but is it my all time holy grail cleanser? Nope, I haven’t found that yet.

The pro to this product is that it’s all natural and organic- which, to me equals happy healthy skin!

2. Toner/hydrator: Rosewater & Glycerin

Now this one is a winner. Soothing, hydrating and best of all- pH balancing. As you may already know, our skin is made up of an acid mantle and the barrier of our skin can sometimes be stripped due to the products we use, therefore causing the pH to become unbalanced. So after using a stripping product like a cleanser, it’s good to use a toner which levels out the skin once out of the shower. This one also smells nice and feels extremely refreshing. 10/10 would recommend!!

3. Min Erbs face oils/serums

Believe it or not, I don’t use conventional moisturizer or lotion anymore. All I use are these nifty face oils before bed, do a little massaging, and BAM, I have glowing skin in the morning. On most nights I use the sea buckthorn and prickly pear oil, because I researched the ingredient list and found it to be the best one for acne prone skin with reishi mushroom, prickly pear and vitamin e to name a few. Love love love it.

A couple times a week I will use the rose and chamomile glow serum when I’m feeling fancy. This one smells amazing and I truly believe it does what it says… makes you glow baby. And who doesn’t want that?

Best part? Min Erbs is a locally sourced and owned small business here in Southern Oregon that uses 100% natural ingredients in each of their products (mainly designed for mama and baby). I can’t rave about them more and encourage everyone to get their hands on their face oils.

4. Tea tree oil

Want to know the best all natural spot treatment on the market? That’s right, yes tree oil. Just dab it on and voila, it helps dry and lessen those pesky breakouts. I use this after I apply my face oil (may not be the correct order, but that’s just how I like it).

Through the Hills & Valleys


Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Psalm 27:14


In a time of questioning and anxiousness I heard this verse so clearly spoken into my life. Literally, I was driving back from a weekend at the coast with my family, listening to one of “The Messenger” podcasts when they reminded their listeners of this specific verse, Psalm 27:14. Apart from the message of the verse, this sentence struck me for many reasons.

All throughout my young life the sequence of numbers, 2714 has been recurring. First, because I have always taken a liking to the number 27 since that is the day of the month I was born, and I think I chose 14 to go along with it because 7 + 7 is 14. I know this is supposed to be a secret, but I’m being completely serious when I say my phone’s password has been those four numbers for three years.

All this to explain, I was thoroughly amazed when, in the silence of my heart, in a time of seeking and asking the Lord for answers, He spoke to me without question. That had never happened to me before in such a direct way.

And God knew just what I needed to hear, he knew exactly what would comfort me in that moment of sadness. Have patience, Maddie, take heart, for there are better things ahead.


When I needed God most, He was there, and he showed me that so graciously. But what we all have to remember is that he is always there, no matter our circumstance, no matter our mood. He is there through the hills and the valleys, through the storm and the calm, through the highs and the lows.

Our God is such a loving God, such a good God who seriously knows our hearts better than we know them ourselves because he knit us together and created our inner-most being. Do not lose heart, wherever you’re at, whatever you may be going through, because God does not leave you, does not stop holding your hand just when things get hard.

Sometimes all I want to do is indulge in something naughty

Ya feel me?

In my 17 years of life I have never made a better, more indulgent healthy treat. It’s like you’re deceiving your sweet tooth, it’s so good.

Fun fact about me: my favorite cake is carrot cake

What I love about this specific recipe is that the cake stays extremely moist, yet still fluffy and the icing seriously mimics real cream cheese frosting like nobody’s business. Plus, for all of you who are already prejudging it’s difficulty, I’m here to tell you that these are really easy to make and don’t require a lot of time or skill (woohoo!).

For the cupcakes…

    • 1 1/4 cups blanched almond flour
    • 2 tablespoons coconut flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/8 teaspoon salt
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 2 large eggs, room temperature
    • 1/3 cup refined melted coconut oil
    • 1/3 cup honey
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla
    • 1/2 cup grated carrots
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with 8 muffin liners.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together the dry ingredients (almond flour through nutmeg). Set this aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the eggs, oil, honey, and vanilla.
  • Add the dry mix to the wet mix just until combined and then gently fold in the grated carrots.
  • Divide the batter evenly among the liners and bake for 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  • Let the muffins cool for 5 minutes in the pan and then remove to a wire rack to cool completely. Do not frost until completely cool.

For the faux cream cheese icing…

  • 1 1/2 cups raw cashews, soaked in hot water 1 hour or cool water 6-8 hours
  • 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk or cream
  • 3-4 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup  coconut oil (preferably the consistency of softened butter)
  • 1/4 tsp lemon zest
  • 1-2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • Soak cashews in very hot water for 1 hour or in cool water for 6-8 hours. Drain thoroughly and add to a blender. To the blender, also add remaining ingredients.
  • Blend until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed. It’s important to get the frosting as creamy and smooth as possible, so blend on high with a high-speed blender until the texture is silky and smooth.
  • Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more maple syrup for sweetness, vanilla for vanilla flavor, or more lemon zest for tang.
  • Transfer frosting to a medium mixing bowl (with room to blend / whisk) and cover. Place in the freezer and chill for 45 minutes. Then remove from freezer and whisk. Freeze for another 45 minutes – 1 hour and whisk again. Then leave in the freezer until semi-firm to the touch (cheesecake texture // ~ 2-4 hours) and use a hand mixer (or whisk) to blend until creamy and smooth. Depending on how firm your frosting is, this may take a little work at the beginning as it softens. If too thick, microwave in 15-second increments until blendable (or leave out at room temperature to soften).
  • Your frosting is ready to use.

It’s that simple.

But First, (no) Coffee


It’s been over two weeks since I’ve had coffee…

and I’m still alive, it’s crazy.


I️ made the decision to cold turkey cut out coffee after I️ noticed that I️ had progressively become dependent on it and drank the addictive substance nearly everyday (and sometimes more than that).

Since then, I’ve also made a conscious effort to drink more water (a gallon a day), get back to eating healthy, and become more active.


What I’ve Noticed

And all I️ can say is WOW… I️ feel like a new woman! Recently I️ have started “opening” at my job, which entails waking up at 3:45 am, so at first I️ was nervous that I️ would struggle without coffee, but I️ can honestly say that by 12 pm I’ve never felt better. I️ have had more energy than I️ used to while drinking caffeine, and I️ think the reason is that I’ve been relying on food as my energy source, and my body is no longer dependent on caffeine as fuel.

It wasn’t just the caffeine that I️ could see progressively making me feel unhealthy, but all that comes along with a cup of coffee. For a while I️ was ordering a 12 ounce coconut milk latte with a bit of honey… but consuming too much of anything isn’t good, so that much milk (which is lightly sweetened already) takes its tole after a while and even though honey is natural, it still turns into sugar in your body.

I️ clearly noticed that my skin was paying for my bad eating habits and coffee addiction, so that is the main reason I quit drinking it.


What I’m Actively Doing in Pursuit of Health

When tackling any dieting issue, I think the first vital step is to get rid of whatever is not making you feel good, because my biggest tip is always listen to your body. But, along with cutting out a particular thing, I think it’s almost equally important to begin adding in good nutrients that can be incorporated into your diet. Many times it can be very simple and it just requires a clear vision and focus on your overall goal.

For example, since my main goal is having clear skin, I have been consciously trying to eat more healthy fats (coconut oil by the spoonful and avocados), I have been drinking lots of water, and trying my best to take micronutrients in the form of vitamins or powders (like collagen) that can easily be added to smoothies. Also, I’ve been opting for healthy choices with the motivation that they will help my skin. What I mean by that, is I’ve been eating more salads in place of “kind of healthy” meals because I know they are actively healing my body.


The Challenge

So… here’s the part where you can get involved.

I want to challenge every one of you to make a lifestyle change that will bring you more happiness in regards to your health. It can be big or small, physical, emotional or spiritual…. whatever you want. Along with the change you make, I want to encourage you to take notice of all of it’s effects in your life, good or bad, and whether it leads to further improvement (like since I cut out coffee, I also began drinking more water and living healthier). a large part of growing up is finding your voice.

Never forget that your heart matters, your opinions are valued and even if you feel forgotten, you’re not. Don’t abandon your beliefs just because others have abandoned theirs, don’t silence your voice just because they aren’t popular words and never conform yourself to the situation you’re put in. You were beautifully and wonderfully made, designed for a purpose, and God is cheering you on, wanting you to embody who he created you to be. So please, don’t forget your worth and be courageous even when it’s hard.


lately I’ve been lucky to work with some very talented friends who are actively pursuing their passions (photography & videography). And let me tell ya, it’s inspiring. It reminds me to do what I love and to do it well.

This was a fun little fall photo shoot I did with my friend TJ (@tylerdooghan) right in our backyard (literally, lol). I am so in awe of his creativity and absolutely loved how these turned out. Color tones, artsiness, uniqueness… so good.

I know how easy it is to see a picture of yourself and immediately criticize each aspect… but I challenge you to take a close up picture (or have someone take one) of yourself and admire your beauty.

Trust me, when I had bad active acne, I was my own biggest critic. I would stare at a photo of my face and literally hate so many things about it. But let me be the first to tell you, that is so unhealthy and unproductive. It would just lead me to further unhappiness.

You are beautiful, so do not believe differently. Don’t believe the lie that skin or any other superficial issue defines you, because it doesn’t. You are defined by your heart and your actions. So be courageous💛 and love yo self, you deserve it sista

Thrifty Finds || Sweater Weather

As I look out my window and see rain, I’m beginning to except the fact that Fall and cold weather is upon us.

Am I happy about it? Ehhh… not really.

Am I coping with it? Yes

Last weekend my family and I took a trip to Portland, Oregon… and along with that always comes thrift store shopping.

Also, I bought four sweaters and a pair of jeans for $21. Like what?! Saver’s was having a 50% off sale.

Lace-up Zara Sweater

I found this gem as I was about to stand in the checkout line.. and I’m so happy I did, because it’s one of my favorite sweaters in my closet now. With it being a size large, it’s oversized, cozy and on trend with the lace up detail.

Knit Cream Sweater

I love the quality and detail of this knit sweater. The material is very soft, and it gives the perfect feminine tough to my Fall wardrobe while keeping me warm. I will probably wear a white long sleeve under it when the weather is chilly. It can easily be dressed up or down.

I picked up this simple staple black sweater with a v-neck and side zipper detail. The material is thin, but still relatively warm, and the fit is perfect for a pair of skinny jeans paired with booties.

H&M Salt and Pepper Cardigan

If you know me at all, you know I wear an open cardigan most days of the week. I was stoked to find this new one to add to my collection. I like that it’s unique in the sense that I don’t see many with the salt and pepper knit, plus it is long enough to cover my butt and comfortable. My favorite way to layer cardigans is with high waisted denim and a basic crop top. They can easily be dressed up for down and are so versatile. I think I’m on my fifth straight day of wearing this one… whoops.

Grocery Haul

Is it weird that I like to know what people buy from the grocery store?

I have taken an interest in Youtube for many years now, and oddly enough, some of my favorite, most captivating videos to watch are grocery store hauls. Basically, I’m really lame….

But since I really enjoy knowing what people stock their fridge with, I thought I’d share my healthy items with all of you.

  • Bananas – for smoothies (best when ripe and frozen)
  • Honey crisp apples – my current obsession (if you haven’t tried one, you have to, hands down best apples)
  • Califia Farms unsweetened vanilla almond milk- just your basic almond milk (I actually prefer their toasted coconut almond milk more)
  • Aidell’s chicken apple sausage- my favorite breakfast sausage, I could eat it every morning (plus no nitrates, additives or unnatural sugar)
  • Nature’s Path fruit sweetened corn flakes- yummy cereal that doesn’t have added sugar? Yes please.
  • Organic cauliflower – my plan is to chop, steam and freeze this baby so I can add it to my smoothies for added thickness (I will keep you updated on that)
  • Strawberries – I actually bought 2 of these because they were on sale and I want to eat all the ripe strawberries before they’re out of season
  • Spinach – already washed and ready to eat (I got this specifically for green smoothies and breakfast scrambles)
  • Sonoma gluten free tortillas – I tried one of these this morning and I’m not sure if I like them or not yet

How to be Healthy When You’re a Student

Work, school, study, repeat

With it being the third week of fall semester, my days have been full. Trying to balance being a student, a part-time employee, and having a social life is nothing short of challenging. Maybe I’m the only one, but one of the first things that I sacrifice when life gets hectic is taking time for myself and focusing on my health. When I have to be at work at 7 it’s hard to eat a filling, healthy breakfast unless I wake up extremely early. Then only have an hour between work and class makes it very difficult to pack a lunch and usually leaves me grabbing something quick. Not to mention, with a packed schedule that demands late nights, early mornings and focus for school work, it’s very easy to become best friends with caffeine. Oh, and working at a coffee shop doesn’t help very much.

Can anyone relate?

For a second there I forgot to spend any time working on myself, and I’m the type of person that if I continue to forget about bettering myself for more than two weeks I start drowning. I won’t even notice it sometimes until subtle things become apparent and I have to stop and realize that the cause of them are from neglecting certain aspects of my life. You guessed it, the first place I see a negative change is my skin… whether it’s from stress or cheating slightly in my diet, I notice direct correlation with breakouts.

Just this past week I looked in the mirror, and all at once, realized wow, when was the last time I did something for me? Mind you, I suddenly became aware of this because of a breakout that gave me a flashback of the years I struggled with acne. I slowly had been losing sight of my health and skincare roots. For the first time I felt as if I could relate to everyone who’s told me their countless excuses as to why they don’t eat a clean diet- “I’m too busy” “I work too much” “School is hard and I can’t worry about that” “My schedule doesn’t allow for me to eat good”. So, if you’re in the same boat as me, rowing down a fast-paced river with lots of rapids, I want you to know that you can still eat clean, but don’t stress about being perfect.

My best tips to live healthy while being busy

1.Make the best possible choices

It’s okay that you’re not super woman and don’t have time to meal prep every single meal seven days a week, and it’s okay that you want to sleep in the extra thirty minutes instead of cooking a full breakfast spread. I understand that life is busy and unpredictable and sometimes you don’t want to worry about working a full day and then coming home to cook dinner. However, what you do have control over is choosing healthy restaurants to get takeout from, and picking the best options when it comes to food. Opt for gluten free whenever possible (almost everywhere should have at least one option nowadays), ask for the dairy free option, and try to go away from processed, sugary foods. Start ordering coffee with honey instead of a sugary syrup sweetener, or switch out cream for an alternative milk like coconut.

2. Have healthy snacks on hand

Trust me, I know how tempting it is to eat the quickest thing while you’re running around town doing errands, studying or find yourself hungry at work… but one of my best recommendations is to always keep quick, healthy snacks on hand for those times when you’re in a pinch. Some of my favorites are RX bars, macro bars, lara bars or perfect bars. Fruit, or trail mix is a great choice, or even hummus and veggies is simple to pack as a snack. Instead of getting fast food, plan ahead and stock up on healthy food when you’re at the grocery store, so that you have healthy options within reach.

3. Drink water

Of course this one should be a no brainer, but for some reason I know that when I’m non-stop busy, I forget to stay hydrated. There are so many benefits to drinking water it’s crazy: clearer skin, increase energy, flushes toxins from the body, aids in weight loss (just to name a few).

3. Get healthy sweets

If you’re anything like me I have the biggest sweet tooth, like ever. So, I think I would die if I didn’t have healthy sweets available to me. Sometimes we need to be rewarded- whether it’s for a hard day at work, or school, or  you’re on your period, or maybe you just feel like eating chocolate and watching the office… you deserve it. But instead of indulging in overly sweet, fake, or processed sugars I recommend opting for the alternatives (and yes, they still taste great, I promise!).

Chocolate: Lily’s Chocolate, Evolve chocolate

Simple Mills cookies– these are the best cookies ever- sweetened with coconut sugar, grain free, and freakin’ delicious

Coconut Bliss ice cream: better than regular full dairy ice cream… this stuff is addicting and only sweetened with agave nectar. What the heck!

4. Invest in yourself

Take time for yourself. Take a bath, put on a face mask, watch your favorite show or listen to your favorite music, light some candles and remember your worth. I find it much easier for myself to stay in a healthy mindset and continue to pursue goals when I practice self care. I love to read the bible and write in my prayer journal. We have to remember to love ourselves and be kind to our bodies because they’re the only ones we have. Don’t be so hard on yourself: it’s okay if you eat chocolate or have something other than a salad, just listen to your body.

5. Be thankful

Count your blessings. From personal experience, I know that I am most happy and healthy when I remember to be positive and have a grateful heart always. If you let negativity creep in it can be easy to lose sight of health goals and caring for our bodies- inside and out.

The Unknown

What is God’s intricate plan for my life?

 

I find myself wondering this a good amount throughout my days. Job opportunities, school, family, travel, relationships….. what is God asking of me?

I want to be His servant and say yes to His plans for me. All I can do is knock on the door and see if it opens. In this season, I need to have the virtues of patience and trust. For his grace is more faithful than my own…
