Through the Hills & Valleys

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Psalm 27:14

In a time of questioning and anxiousness I heard this verse so clearly spoken into my life. Literally, I was driving back from a weekend at the coast with my family, listening to one of “The Messenger” podcasts when they reminded their listeners of this specific verse, Psalm 27:14. Apart from the message of the verse, this sentence struck me for many reasons.

All throughout my young life the sequence of numbers, 2714 has been recurring. First, because I have always taken a liking to the number 27 since that is the day of the month I was born, and I think I chose 14 to go along with it because 7 + 7 is 14. I know this is supposed to be a secret, but I’m being completely serious when I say my phone’s password has been those four numbers for three years.

All this to explain, I was thoroughly amazed when, in the silence of my heart, in a time of seeking and asking the Lord for answers, He spoke to me without question. That had never happened to me before in such a direct way.

And God knew just what I needed to hear, he knew exactly what would comfort me in that moment of sadness. Have patience, Maddie, take heart, for there are better things ahead.

When I needed God most, He was there, and he showed me that so graciously. But what we all have to remember is that he is always there, no matter our circumstance, no matter our mood. He is there through the hills and the valleys, through the storm and the calm, through the highs and the lows.

Our God is such a loving God, such a good God who seriously knows our hearts better than we know them ourselves because he knit us together and created our inner-most being. Do not lose heart, wherever you’re at, whatever you may be going through, because God does not leave you, does not stop holding your hand just when things get hard.

But First, (no) Coffee

It’s been over two weeks since I’ve had coffee…

and I’m still alive, it’s crazy.

I️ made the decision to cold turkey cut out coffee after I️ noticed that I️ had progressively become dependent on it and drank the addictive substance nearly everyday (and sometimes more than that).

Since then, I’ve also made a conscious effort to drink more water (a gallon a day), get back to eating healthy, and become more active.

What I’ve Noticed

And all I️ can say is WOW… I️ feel like a new woman! Recently I️ have started “opening” at my job, which entails waking up at 3:45 am, so at first I️ was nervous that I️ would struggle without coffee, but I️ can honestly say that by 12 pm I’ve never felt better. I️ have had more energy than I️ used to while drinking caffeine, and I️ think the reason is that I’ve been relying on food as my energy source, and my body is no longer dependent on caffeine as fuel.

It wasn’t just the caffeine that I️ could see progressively making me feel unhealthy, but all that comes along with a cup of coffee. For a while I️ was ordering a 12 ounce coconut milk latte with a bit of honey… but consuming too much of anything isn’t good, so that much milk (which is lightly sweetened already) takes its tole after a while and even though honey is natural, it still turns into sugar in your body.

I️ clearly noticed that my skin was paying for my bad eating habits and coffee addiction, so that is the main reason I quit drinking it.

What I’m Actively Doing in Pursuit of Health

When tackling any dieting issue, I think the first vital step is to get rid of whatever is not making you feel good, because my biggest tip is always listen to your body. But, along with cutting out a particular thing, I think it’s almost equally important to begin adding in good nutrients that can be incorporated into your diet. Many times it can be very simple and it just requires a clear vision and focus on your overall goal.

For example, since my main goal is having clear skin, I have been consciously trying to eat more healthy fats (coconut oil by the spoonful and avocados), I have been drinking lots of water, and trying my best to take micronutrients in the form of vitamins or powders (like collagen) that can easily be added to smoothies. Also, I’ve been opting for healthy choices with the motivation that they will help my skin. What I mean by that, is I’ve been eating more salads in place of “kind of healthy” meals because I know they are actively healing my body.

The Challenge

So… here’s the part where you can get involved.

I want to challenge every one of you to make a lifestyle change that will bring you more happiness in regards to your health. It can be big or small, physical, emotional or spiritual…. whatever you want. Along with the change you make, I want to encourage you to take notice of all of it’s effects in your life, good or bad, and whether it leads to further improvement (like since I cut out coffee, I also began drinking more water and living healthier). Who’s ready? I’m excited to hear about how you apply this challenge to your life, so please let me know if you decide to take it.

have courage & be kind

no matter what circumstance, let your courage be unshakable.

a large part of growing up is finding your voice.

Never forget that your heart matters, your opinions are valued and even if you feel forgotten, you’re not. Don’t abandon your beliefs just because others have abandoned theirs, don’t silence your voice just because they aren’t popular words and never conform yourself to the situation you’re put in. You were beautifully and wonderfully made, designed for a purpose, and God is cheering you on, wanting you to embody who he created you to be. So please, don’t forget your worth and be courageous even when it’s hard.

lately I’ve been lucky to work with some very talented friends who are actively pursuing their passions (photography & videography). And let me tell ya, it’s inspiring. It reminds me to do what I love and to do it well.

This was a fun little fall photo shoot I did with my friend TJ (@tylerdooghan) right in our backyard (literally, lol). I am so in awe of his creativity and absolutely loved how these turned out. Color tones, artsiness, uniqueness… so good.

I know how easy it is to see a picture of yourself and immediately criticize each aspect… but I challenge you to take a close up picture (or have someone take one) of yourself and admire your beauty.

Trust me, when I had bad active acne, I was my own biggest critic. I would stare at a photo of my face and literally hate so many things about it. But let me be the first to tell you, that is so unhealthy and unproductive. It would just lead me to further unhappiness.

You are beautiful, so do not believe differently. Don’t believe the lie that skin or any other superficial issue defines you, because it doesn’t. You are defined by your heart and your actions. So be courageous💛 and love yo self, you deserve it sista

Thrifty Finds || Sweater Weather

As I look out my window and see rain, I’m beginning to except the fact that Fall and cold weather is upon us.

Am I happy about it? Ehhh… not really.

Am I coping with it? Yes

Last weekend my family and I took a trip to Portland, Oregon… and along with that always comes thrift store shopping.

Also, I bought four sweaters and a pair of jeans for $21. Like what?! Saver’s was having a 50% off sale.

Lace-up Zara Sweater

I found this gem as I was about to stand in the checkout line.. and I’m so happy I did, because it’s one of my favorite sweaters in my closet now. With it being a size large, it’s oversized, cozy and on trend with the lace up detail.

Knit Cream Sweater

I love the quality and detail of this knit sweater. The material is very soft, and it gives the perfect feminine tough to my Fall wardrobe while keeping me warm. I will probably wear a white long sleeve under it when the weather is chilly. It can easily be dressed up or down.

DSC06747DSC06746DSC06748Black Nordstrom BP Sweater

I picked up this simple staple black sweater with a v-neck and side zipper detail. The material is thin, but still relatively warm, and the fit is perfect for a pair of skinny jeans paired with booties.

H&M Salt and Pepper Cardigan

If you know me at all, you know I wear an open cardigan most days of the week. I was stoked to find this new one to add to my collection. I like that it’s unique in the sense that I don’t see many with the salt and pepper knit, plus it is long enough to cover my butt and comfortable. My favorite way to layer cardigans is with high waisted denim and a basic crop top. They can easily be dressed up for down and are so versatile. I think I’m on my fifth straight day of wearing this one… whoops.

November Favorites // 12.3.15

We have zipped through yet another month in the year of 2015, what?!?

Who else is in complete awe of it already being December?

For the sole reason that I adore watching my favorite Youtuber’s monthly favorites videos, I decided to create my own compilation with the hope that it is mildly helpful for at least one of my readers out in the world of cyber space.

Before I delve in, I wish to make the point of saying that if you’ve been enjoying any wonderful products during the month of November, I would love to hear about them. I am always looking for new products to try out!

Now for the fun part…

Beauty favorites

I have recently been loving a few products from one of the best natural brands: Pacifica. The first product is their limited edition eye shadow palette (that I don’t know the name of), which includes a variety of matte and shimmery shades. For the past few weeks I have been using the peachy metalic color all over my lids, then applying NYC’s smooth skin bronzing in “Sunny” into my crease as a transition color. To finish off the look I like to lightly smudge the Pacifica deep matte burgundy color into my lower lash line in order to make my brown eyes pop. I apply mascara, and boom! my simple makeup look is complete.

I have been religiously using a mix of the Solar Protection SPF foundation and Pacifica Alight multi-mineral BB cream as my foundation base, applying it with my recently purchased Real Techniques miracle complextion sponge for a flawless, full-coverage finish. Because I struggle with blemished skin, I prefer to use a majority of products that are on the more natural side in order to not irritate my sensitive skin. And never have I tried out a Beauty Blender sponge previously (simply because of the investment); however, for a quarter of the cost I was able to purchase the Real Techniques dupe, if you will, which I have been very impressed with.

One brand that I have currently been loving, and is prominent in my skincare routine, is Michael Todd. Their charcoal detox deep pore cleanser, jojoba charcoal facial exfoliator, kaolin clay mask and antioxidant carrot multi-vitamin serum are all incorporated into my daily skincare routine. I cannot rave about this great, all-natural company enough; they make wonderful, healthful products for my delicate skin.

Fashion favorites

This November has been one of the coldest months in Oregon I can ever recall. At times, I find it difficult to dress in a cute fashion when the weather is so extreme, because it’s quite tempting to wear sweats every day, or even a fuzzy blanket out of the house. However, I have managed to find a middle ground where I can sport outfits that are both warm and fashionable. For example, I have been constantly wearing turtle necks and mock neck sweaters that range from fuzzy, wooly, chunky and soft. I am currently obsessed!

I have been layering many staple pieces in my closet, like this warm, gray coat over a variety of long sleeves or t-shirts.

One of my other favorite new clothing treasures is this vintage denim midi skirt, detailed with funky fabric. I have no other skirt in this style, and I believe it adds a nice and interesting element to my wardrobe.  Random favorites

Music….

Of course I have to include a few of my absolute favorite and replayed songs for this month. Lauren Daigle never fails to knock my socks off with her soulful and meaningful christian gospel music, but my all-time favorite song of her’s is Trust in You because of just how true it is.

 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n_aVFVveJNs

Another artist, although his songs are in no way “current”, never disappoints with his unique sound. Alt-j is one of my favorite artists ever, and I’ve just begun delving into his full album of Tesselate which never fails to put me in a better mood. Matilda is one to applaud.

And for my last music favorite, I have been playing Adele’s album, 19, nonstop whenever I’m getting ready in the morning or riding along in the car. Although I can appreciate a couple of the songs off of her newest album, Adele 25, I am not the biggest fan of the more modern sound she has now personified. My number one favorite from the UK star will never stray from Daydreamer; so good!

Youtubers…

Kathleen Lights is my number one YouTube guru hands down. I admire her genuine and goofy personality that couples with her knowledge of makeup and beauty. If you haven’t watched her yet, and need something to binge watch over Christmas break, go check her out!

https://m.youtube.com/user/KathleenLights

Bible verses…

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.” Philippians 2:14-16 💛

I love this verse, and the message it portrays; definitely one to live by daily.

Edibles…

My main source of liquids have been a great amount of water and many cups of tea! Two of my favorite tea flavors this month have been Trader Joes’ candy cane tea and Celestial seasons Vanilla Sleepytime. If you’re a tea lover, you’ll be sure to develop an obsession just like I have!

Derma e Firming DMAE Moisturizer Review + EXCLUSIVE COUPONS

Happy Sunday!

Fall is such a wonderful time that is packed full of color, holiday spirit and yummy autumn scents, however, the weather begins to turn chilly and my skin feels the biggest impact due to the dryness in the air. Most of the other months of the year I find my skin to be quite oily, but during the later months it takes on very different characteristics, causing occasional dry patches and discomfort. Moisturizer is my best friend during this time of year, and nothing makes a girl like me happier than finding a truly magnificent facial moisturizer.

I am only fifteen years old, and my skin is still in it’s youth, so thankfully I don’t have to worry about any loss of elasticity quite yet (hallelujah), however, I do struggle with uneven and blemished skin due to my teenage years and genetics. And many skincare products, such as new cleansers or moisturizes, can often break me out because of the ingredients they seep into your skin. I have found, over the past few years, that natural skincare products make a tremendous difference in keeping my skin healthy, and I tend to reach for them many times instead of chemically-infused products.

I recently began using the Derma e Firming DMAE Moisturizer to keep my skin looking smooth and hydrated for the fall time. Not only is Derma e one of the first all-natural skincare brands, but their products are also vegan and cruelty-free. After trying out this product for around one week, I can honestly say that my face feels much softer, moisturized and glowy. The product applies easily, being that it is packaged in a pot, and glides onto the skin effortlessly. Unlike many moisturizers I have experimented with, the firming DMAE moisturizer does a nice job of absorbing into the skin for a deep hydration and does not leave behind a heavy residue. Another plus to this product is that a little goes a long way, making for a lasting supply of moisturizer.

2014062512263811603_med

One of the firming DMAE moisturizer’s main characteristics is that is helps to firm and lift skin with it’s skin-firming formula, rich in vitamins and nutrients. It contains 1% of Alpha Lipoic Acid; which occasionally causes an adverse reaction on some skin types, but most times this ingredient performs it’s job of bringing elasticity back to the skin. Although I don’t need any firming done to my face, I believe it’s a quality that could be more beneficial for a slightly older customer base, or for people who are searching for a good, natural skincare product that firms their skin, no matter their age.

Here a test is shown between the well-known product Perricone MD Face Finishing Moisturizer and Derma e’s Firming DMAE Moisturizer that clearly results in the outcome of Derma e’s product to be better by most people.

One of the best things about the Firming DMAE Moisturizer is that it can be found at most Walgreen’s! Yes, although it is a great, seemingly high-end, skincare product it can be found right at your local drugstore. And Derma e was kind enough to supply me with a discount coupon for you guys, to use at your Walgreen’s …

Print out the coupons and buy some derma e at Walgreens!

This post is sponsored BrandBacker, but all opinions are my own like always.

Sprinkles upon sprinkles.

Yesterday I baked a birthday cake for my sister’s big 18.

I made a 4 layer vanilla velvet cake with CONFETTI. Yes, I created my very own confetti cake without a box mix. And holy cow, it is so simple, just add lots of sprinkles. I iced the cake with an amazingly smooth almond buttercream and decorated it with a star tip and more sprinkles.

I was able to bake this whole beautiful thing without my sister knowing and surprise her at her work with her co-workers. It was a success!

It’s my masterpiece, plus it made people smile. Hope you all enjoy.

Recent Escapades.

Yes, I was on Spring break last week, and no I did not post as much as I promised I would.

BUT, I did go to a few pretty neat places and document some of the fun activities I partook in. So we’ll just call it even, and I don’t have to feel bad and you don’t have to be disappointed.

My spring break did not start off well. I was sick from Monday through Friday with the type of sickness that just makes you lethargic at first, and then slowly progresses into a head cold. Not fun. Anya (who you should all know by now) came in late Thursday night just in time to spend my birthday with me.

Yes, I was sick on my birthday. Nevertheless, I convinced my dad to come to breakfast with his favorite girls, at my favorite breakfast restaurant, where they serve my favorite corn beef hash. It was great. I also got a pedicure, AND both Anya and I passed our permit tests now that I was 15 and she had been for a few months. The day just kept getting better when I begged my mom to drive us up to the top of a beautiful mountain where we would watch the sunset and eat our take-out dinner. Sadly, the gate leading to the lookout tower with the best view was closed for some dumb reason so we had to settle with a short hike, no sunset and cold, gusty air while we ate our not-so-warm meal. However, I still really enjoyed our time and company, plus we saw a baby black bear barrel along the road ahead of us, which was pretty darn cute. I’m not complaining, it was a good birthday.

The rest of the week went smoothly, reminding me of just how happy sweet souls and warm sunshine make me.

This spring break was one for the books, I couldn’t have been more blessed.

Thank you to everyone for the smiles and laughs, I am grateful for God’s beauty and people’s love. p.s. THANK YOU ALSO FOR 100 FOLLOWERS. My heart is elated.

The Progression of Break.

Well. It is spring break. A time I’ve been looking forward to for months now.

And now that it’s finally arrived, I guess I’ll say, it’s different than I expected it would be.

I feel like each school break that comes along makes me have some big epiphany. Mine happened towards the beginning of this one.

When you’re a child, it’s normal to hear the phrase, “Just wait, life get’s harder”, or something of the sort. But never had I imagined that being a teenager, in these in-between years, would be as hard as it is. The worst part, in my opinion, is the ability to see peoples’ true colors. Or, inability, I should say.

Maybe I’m very different from most teenagers, but the biggest downfall to my character is the fact that I have an extremely difficult time seeing anything but the good in my peers. Even when, time and time again, someone makes it clear to see their impurity. In some ways it’s a blessing, but it can definitely be seen as a curse as well. Anyone feel me?

On a whole separate note, I am beyond elated for the upcoming days.

Tonight: My dad comes home from Hawaii (with yummy Hawaiian goodies in hand)

Thursday: My best friend, whom I’ve mentioned so many times before, will be coming home for a visit!

Friday: MY BIRTHDAY

… and the rest will follow. Who else has fun plans for the last portion of break?

Last but not least, I have been trying my hardest to fight off a small sore throat for around 3 days now. Luckily, that means I’m able to lounge around the house and catch up on Revenge, but I’m hoping it will dissipate within the next 24 hours. Crossing my fingers.

Although things can be rough sometimes, there’s no doubt in my mind that God is by my side each moment. And that I am BLESSED. Thank you for indulging in my spring break and life. Tell me about yours! Love all. Love Madeline.

Filtered Skin B5 Serum Review.

I have been given the privilege to try out Filtered Skin’s B5 serum, as I’m sure you already know by the title.

Filtered Skin is a company just getting started and I couldn’t be more grateful to be apart of their product recognition.

And I couldn’t have been more pleased with the hydrating serum. It applies easily with an eye dropper applicator, it feels extremely light and weightless on the skin, and leaves my face feeling soft and moisturized. I’m very happy with how the serum works, especially after I get done cleansing and exfoliating my face.

Thank you for reading my skincare review. I hope you all enjoyed, and I will soon have lifestyle posts for you all! Love all. Love Madeline.
