Grocery Haul

Is it weird that I like to know what people buy from the grocery store?

I have taken an interest in Youtube for many years now, and oddly enough, some of my favorite, most captivating videos to watch are grocery store hauls. Basically, I’m really lame….

But since I really enjoy knowing what people stock their fridge with, I thought I’d share my healthy items with all of you.

  • Bananas – for smoothies (best when ripe and frozen)
  • Honey crisp apples – my current obsession (if you haven’t tried one, you have to, hands down best apples)
  • Califia Farms unsweetened vanilla almond milk- just your basic almond milk (I actually prefer their toasted coconut almond milk more)
  • Aidell’s chicken apple sausage- my favorite breakfast sausage, I could eat it every morning (plus no nitrates, additives or unnatural sugar)
  • Nature’s Path fruit sweetened corn flakes- yummy cereal that doesn’t have added sugar? Yes please.
  • Organic cauliflower – my plan is to chop, steam and freeze this baby so I can add it to my smoothies for added thickness (I will keep you updated on that)
  • Strawberries – I actually bought 2 of these because they were on sale and I want to eat all the ripe strawberries before they’re out of season
  • Spinach – already washed and ready to eat (I got this specifically for green smoothies and breakfast scrambles)
  • Sonoma gluten free tortillas – I tried one of these this morning and I’m not sure if I like them or not yet

well now you know what I picked up at the grocery store

this just got personal

what do you buy at the grocery store?

Duck feather and herbs review

Natural apothecary is quickly becoming very popular. Let’s ditch the over-processed, chemical-filled pharmaceutical medicines, and instead fill our cabinets with local, natural medicinal herbs.

A company that I have recently been loving is called Duck Feather Herbs, based in the quirky city of Portland, Oregon. They sell their hand crafted tinctures and teas on Etsy, and each product is made with love. They were kind enough to send me several items to try out, so here I am today commin’ atcha with my full review.

Sleeping Beauty tea-

This soothing substance is sure to calm anyone’s nerves. With hints of chamomile and lavender, this loose leaf tea is the perfect beverage to sip on before bedtime.

Good belly tincture-

Looking for a natural remedy for an unsettled stomach? This tincture is a great medicinal herb that soothes even the gnarliest aches. Just put a few drops into your favorite tea, sit back, and let your tummy be soothed. img_2817

Have a good rest tincture-

One of my favorites. Just drop a few drops into the Sleeping beauty teaor another one that I love; vanilla Sleepytime before bed, and rest easily with sweet dreams. With hues of chamomile and lavender it is sure to have you sound asleep in no time.

Healing Head tincture-

I get so many headaches, so man, any relief is great for me! Interlaced with feverfew, skullcap, lemon balm and peppermint, this tincture is the perfect cure for those nagging headaches and will leave you feeling refreshed for whatever the world might throw at you.

What are your thoughts on natural apothecary? I’d love to know. Thank you for reading, have a wonderful day, Madeline.

Recipe// Mid-Sunday Treat

 Happy Sunday!

Today has been a great day, I was able to finish my chores around the house, get in an exercise and make this flippin’ delicious post-workout treat!

Want to know how to make this customizable “acai bowl”?

Here’s how…

What you’ll need:

  • A handful of spinach or kale
  • 1 cup of frozen berries (I chose a cherry mixture)
  • Half of a frozen banana
  • A few splashes of almond milk (enough to make it blendable, but we still want it to be thick)

Simply put all of those ingredients into your blender, and blend until creamy and thick, almost like soft serve.

Next, put the smoothie mixture into a bowl and top with your favorite things! I used strawberries, hazelnuts, pecans, gluten free granola, chia seeds and a couple spoonfuls of almond butter.

Finally, arrange it to be Instagram-worthy, snap a few pics, and enjoy! Let me tell you, this was delicious and full of antioxidants, fiber and nutrients that are perfect fuel for the body, especially after a strenuous workout.

I hope you enjoyed this quick, easy and healthy recipe! If you try it out please send me a picture on my Twitter @mangopapaya27 or my Instagram @moody.madeline❤️

Love all. Love Madeline. Xoxo.

Get Healthy with me! + Exclusive Discounts

Dear friends,

I’m here to offer you a proposition… Let’s get healthy together!

As you may know (if you’ve been following my journey), I have completely transformed my diet. Yes, I have been gluten, dairy and sugar-free for over three weeks now. And I am over-the-moon, completely loving my new lifestyle change. If you missed my initial spiel about healthier eating, you can read it here.

I want to encourage anyone and everyone, no matter how young, old, healthy or unhealthy your current lifestyle, to join me in my clean journey! I wish for everyone to feel the energy, fulfillment and overall well-being that I have experienced when I eat like this. I don’t want you to feel discouraged, or stressed out because the thought of changing your diet is such a large lifestyle change. Because honestly, just starting with baby steps, like cutting out one food group at a time (like gluten, for example), is a large step towards a healthier life.

One thing that really pushes me to continue eating clean and nourishing my body is immersing myself in all the cool health food companies that are wide-spread nowadays. With it being 2016, we literally have amazing health food right at our finger tips.

The first company I will be talking about is Graze, an online subscription box that is filled with nourishing (and yummy) snacks that is sent to you each week, or modified to your liking. Let me tell you, I was way too overly excited when this small, 8-snack box arrived at my house. Yes, I am a nerd. But it is seriously so cool! I was able to customize the snacks I would receive to my own liking, which is gluten, dairy and sugar-free, on their website. They have a wonderful variety of snacks to choose from, ranging from dried fruit, nuts, popcorn and even energy bars.

If you’re interested in this trendy little subscription box, I have a sweet deal for you! When you use the code: C96DRXQTP at checkout, you automatically receive your 1st and 5th box for free when you sign up. What?! I know right, this is perfect motivation to get start putting great and healthy food into your body!

And the second online food service that I recently discovered is called Thrive Market. Thrive makes it possible for you to order all of your favorite snacks and cooking ingredients without even leaving the comfort of your own home. When this box came in the mail I also freaked out a little too much.

Not only does it eliminate going to the grocery store all together, but Thrive always has discounted items. Who doesn’t want to save money? And lucky for you, I have another discount code that will save you $10 off your first Thrive market purchase.

Click here to visit their website and use the code:THRIVE86R53 at checkout to redeem your $10 0ff.

p.s.- their packaging also had me jumping for joy. I mean, just look at how cute this is!

Last but not least, I wanted to share with you this yummy photo of my gluten, diary and sugar-free spaghetti that I made yesterday. To give my body a bit of a boost I placed the pasta on a bed of fresh spinach, and let me tell you, it was delicious!

Hyperbiotics Immune Vitamin Review.

I was recently introduced to the Hyperbiotics Immune formula vitamins. I am always on the search for new health supplements with beneficial factors such as one that help keep your immune system strong, therefore, when I found this new product I was ecstatic. the first quality that amazed me was the claim that the tablets used in the vitamins are “15x more effective than capsules”. that alone is a large statement, which always makes me wonder how true it is. at the bottom of the container the brand also claims they are 100% vegetarian, lactose free and gluten free, and the list goes on, which all sound like pluses to me. hyperbiotics says they supply the only products in which a person’s good bacteria, commonly diminished by today’s overly-processed foods, is repopulated in the body. the prominent ingredients that make up the supplements are Bioavailable Vitamin C, Zinc and Echinacea.  another good thing about Hyperbiotics Immune is that they don’t require refrigeration and they hold a shelf life of up to 18 months.

cleansing my body, detoxing my soul.

funny title, right? but don’t take it too lightly, because i mean what i say. just recently i have been more troubled with the state of my skin than i have been in a while. i have large pores (curse my genes), which causes them to be more prone to clogging. even though i am adamant about washing my face twice a day every day, my skin continues to produce stubborn acne and the occasional “break out”. being a teenage girl, it’s hard to live with such a struggle, therefore, i’m always researching new ways to rid young skins of pesky pimples. and believe me, i’ve tried a number of different methods in which people claim work for their skin, but apparently not mine.

1. the most expensive treatment i’ve used is Proactive, and let me just say it is not worth all the hype. i first used it two years ago in the fall, but stopped using it because the drying effects it had on my skin (probably also due to the colder, drier months). not to mention back then my acne wasn’t as bad as today, so it didn’t make a big difference if i used it or not. back to present time, i began using it again around a month ago and haven’t seen any good results… if anything, it made my skin worse. and a definite disclaimer for Proactive is that it isn’t formulated for sensitive or dry skin. in my opinion i have combination skin, but my T-zone gets unmanageably oily throughout the day, causing the cream to make the other regions of my face flaky and dry. another down side is that the cleanser/exfoliator that comes in the kit is much too abrasive and irritated my skin. in no way would i ever recommend purchasing Proactive because i have had no luck with it’s properties.

2. i’ve never bought any other acne treatments, but i have tried countless home remedies, never one seeming to do the trick. i’ve made many face masks including: oatmeal, egg white, honey and cinnamon, chocolate and greek yogurt and countless others. some seem to improve my skin for a short period of time, but never anything lasting.

after a few years of desperately trying to find the magic trick, i’ve resorted to eating a healthier diet, taking skin-friendly vitamins, and buying a retinol serum off Amazon that is said to work wonders. i’m hoping that by taking all of these measures i will see drastic improvements with my troubled skin in upcoming months. since sunday i have been eating healthy, for example, smoothies, vegetables, limited sugar, and gluten free. so far it hasn’t been a problem for me and i’m really enjoying the change:) after thanksgiving (starting Friday) i’m planning on doing a cleanse/detox in order to start eating fresh with a clean system and clearing out the impurities of processed foods. the cleanse was formulated by Dr. Oz, where you follow the planned out recipes, including green tea, smoothies and vitamins for three days straight. since you don’t get any protein with the diet, it isn’t recommended to exert too much energy during the time span. my mom and sister are going to do it with me, and i cannot wait to feel cleansed and detoxed. if you are interested in cleansing, we can do it together! i’m starting on friday morning and going until sunday night, here is the whole plan for all 3 days if you want to print it out.

today i went to my local herb shop any purchase vitamin b5, which is said to treat acne very well according to many non-professional studies that are found on the internet. one of the cons to this route is that the recommended dosage is somewhere around 10g. (20 capsules) and to me that sounds like an extreme amount (not to mention, expensive as heck). i plan on starting with a lot less than that and seeing if it affects my skin in any way, if not i will slowly increase my intake at a safe amount. if you have ever tried this method of acne treatment or know anyone that has, please tell me how it worked for you or them so i have more knowledge on the natural vitamin. like i said i also ordered a retinol serum that is meant to help troubled skin in a more intense way, from the outside in. i’m praying that i’ll like it and that it will help my skin combined with taking the b5. i ordered it off Amazon and it’s called, Retinol .25 by the brand SkinMedica, i was told about it by a friend who said it worked for her. all i can do is hope this treatment works for me, and i can keep all of you updated if you would like. love all. love madeline.
