Comparing Confidence

I was thinking back to my young (and naive) middle school self. A girl who was courageous and who was unafraid to launch herself into any new relationship, opportunity, project or period of life. Of course I was burned a number of times because of this, but I also gained and learned so much about myself, others and the world during those years.

I was fearless. I flirted with boys, I wore crazy unique outfits (that didn’t always make the impression I was going for), I shared my heart with anyone who would listen, I laughed, but I also cried about everything. I was full of emotion and you could almost always count on me speaking my mind without holding back even a little.

I think growing up means losing many of the qualities I just explained, it’s just the way life goes. And boy am I thankful that I don’t cry about every little thing, or exploit myself to the world or wear wacky clothes anymore, but I do miss my unshakeable confidence.

I was never intimidated by boys, I was outgoing and talkative around everyone; whether I knew them or not, I never experienced anxiety around large groups of people, and I never deemed myself unworthy just because society said so. And to be honest, the reason I acted so bold and sure of myself, was because I thought I was the shit. Little Maddie had a big ego and I’ll admit it, but hey, at least it taught me confidence. lol.

Now I’m at the age in which, as a child, I thought was “so old” and far off. And when I take a step back and look at who I am today compared to then, I feel as if society has somehow managed to change me. I am not always confident in myself; in my judgement, my relationships, my accomplishments, my decisions. I am unconfident. I let the world tell me what’s acceptable and what isn’t. I let the world tell me who I should like, how I should feel and worst of all; at times I let the world, or certain individuals, determine my worth.

And that is not okay.dsc_0178

To be confident in yourself.

Don’t let the world, or society, tell you what you have to be 0r how you have to act. Be you in everything you pursue.

While I was talking with my best friend tonight, I came to a realization that my happiness should not be dependent on any relationship. I don’t want to feel weighed-down, or distressed, because I feel unworthy.

We are children of a gracious God who always calls us worthy. Worthy of giving and receiving love. And I think it’s time we started treating ourselves that way.

Thrifted Jewels// Pt. I

Often times I look down at my outfit that I chose for the day and think to myself “wow, it’s like I’m a walking thrift store advertisement,” because every single component, from my shoes to my hat, is either vintage or second hand.

But hey, the important thing is that I trick people into thinking that I’m trendy and have a unique style, when really, I just don’t like to spend much money on my clothing.

Ha. All jokes aside, I love thrifting not only because of the rad pieces that are just waiting to be discovered, but I really enjoy the process. Although many people find it tedious and sometimes “gross”, I actually like to spend the time sifting through countless racks packed with clothing. And when I happen to come across something that is literally priceless to me, I find myself to be much more elated than if I were to simply go to a “popular” store, grab something off the rack, and spend a crap-load of cash on it.

Thrifting is always a hit or miss, you either find cool things or walk away with nothing. But luckily the other day I found some keepers that warm my little grandma heart.

At first glance, I almost passed this colorful piece of artwork up. But when I gave it a closer look, I fell in love with the message and the artistic style behind the small framed paper. Now it sits front-and-center on my make-shift desk, and every time I sit down to do work, I get to read it and think of these wonderful virtues that everyone should be reminded of. It’s gently telling me to “take each day as it comes, and don’t get ahead of yourself.” dsc_0827

I don’t know if the brand Papaya is popular in any other state than Oregon, but this phone case in the Papaya store is normally around $25 and I got this one for $2. I was pumped.dsc_0836

Ahhh this hat is just too perfect. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit on my big head, but I couldn’t walk away from it. I am planning on selling it (or maybe just squeezing it onto my head). dsc_0849

And now for the hands down best find of the day.

A vintage Pendleton oversized white button down with the most amazing design on the back. It says “Let’er Buck!” with an adorable cowboy riding a stallion. I just love it. dsc_0856dsc_0863

New Season, New Look: Derma e Night and Day Creme Review


With the welcoming of a new season, there have been an abundance of changes in the air… and in our skin.

As many of you know, I’m fortunate enough to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, however, many of you may have also heard about the hurricane that we experienced over the weekend. There was literally a tornado that struck along Oregon’s coastline… what?! That is unheard of during my lifetime, and ever for that matter (that I’m aware of).

Anyways, my point is that when the weather changes from hot to cold in a short period of time, one of the main things that is affected is our skin (and not in a good way). I don’t know about yours, but my skin, especially my face, gets way more dry than normal. One of the most important precautions in keeping our skin looking dewy and glowy is to moisturize the heck out of it.

Today, I’m teaming up with Derma e to bring you a review of their newest addition to their advanced, natural line of skincare products, that launched last month. What’s the big news? New and improved packaging! But don’t worry, they still sell the same great products (no changes to the formulas), just with a new look. Not only do they have a new look, but they are also expanding the stores that they sell in, woohoo! You can now find Derma e at Ulta, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target and other stores. The only way I can explain their new transition is innovative and clean; perfect for the minimalist aesthetic.

Here, I’m only focusing on the Hydrating day and night creams to compare the old and new packaging, but Derma e will be switching all of their other products over to the new packaging by March of 2017.

Now for the review…

I know that my cousin experiences dry skin during the colder months and she needed a new moisturizer. Her thoughts after using the Hydrating Night Cream for two weeks:

The first thing she told me was how much better she liked the new packing. Good job Derma e! She applied it as the directions stated, after cleansing your face at night. She was pleased with her results and described the moisturizer to be “just the right thickness I want for overnight hydration”. She applied it on any pesky dry patches, and by morning, she said, they has disappeared. In the past, she hadn’t been compelled to stick with a skincare routine, but after trying out the night and day cream, she found herself taking more time to pamper her skin and enjoy the process. She told me that she was scared to use such a thick moisturizer at first, because she has mildly oily skin around her T-zone area. But after using it for a few days she was pleasantly surprised to find that her skin did not look or feel oily.

Here are her thoughts on the Hydrating day creme:

Her favorite quality of the moisturizer is the smell, as funny as that sounds. She really enjoys the consistency and easy spreadability of the hydrating creme. She felt as if it gave her skin just the right amount of hydration throughout the day, and whereas with other moisturizers she’s tried, she feels this one really sinks in and lasts all day. She would recommend this product to anyone looking for the perfect light moisturizer during the day, as she explained “I just put it on and run out the door”.

Comparatively, here are the night and day cream (with the old and new packaging) side by side. I think this small change in packaging makes a world of difference for Derma e products, mostly because now the look and feel of the products that you’re purchasing seem to line up more closely with the higher-end pricing. Third day of school, check.

Today I had one biology class that went from 9:30 in the morning until 2:20 in the afternoon, save the 5o minute break. Let me just tell you, that’s a lot of science for one girl in one day. But I survived and I’m here to tell you that dressing for success is important.

Who cares if some people might think, or even say, “why do you dress up so much just for school?” as if you personally offended them by looking nice. I know that when I get dressed in the morning, I want to put on an outfit that best expresses myself. I want to look good so I can feel better about taking on a long day of work, school, or play. I know that when I dress according to my style, and wear something which pushes me to be creative, it helps my mindset continue to pursue creativity throughout the day.

How we decide to dress really says a lot about us, whether it seems like it or not. It can be used as a creative outlet if one chooses to do so.

I sported my trendy, a-line style denim skirt equipped with brass buttons with my oversized, beachy button-down blouse that I tied at my waist. Underneath my shirt, I wore my favorite American Eagle halter top bralette. I paired the look with my casual white sandals and threw my hair into a messy high pony (because let’s be honest, I’ve been living off of dry shampoo lately).

On a side note, as much as I love to travel and visit amazing destinations, I will always call this scenic area home. Southern Oregon has so much to offer, and I am a very blessed girl to only live 10 minutes from this beautiful back-road.

Embracing Yourself (a rant, by Maddie)

As children, the iconic question that never seems to disappear (and only becomes asked more frequently as one gets older) is, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”

Thinking back, all the times I remember people asking me these simple ten words, I gave them an off-the-top-of-my-head answer and didn’t give it much more thought. But now I’m sixteen, a senior in high school (yes, I am quite young for my grade), and as the question seems to be the only topic of conversation nowadays, I can’t seem to just keep brushing it off.

What do I want to be? Well, I can easily answer with a stream of professions… a writer, a film maker, a story teller, a fashion designer, a cook, a nutritionist, a physical therapist, a personal trainer, a professional surfer, a beach bum, a professional outdoors woman and the list goes on. But if I had to choose one thing I wanted to become when I grow up, well, that’s where I’m stuck.

I have friends applying to colleges, friends who have known what they want to do since the forth grade… but me? I’m just trying to make it through my final year of high school the best I can.

I want to pose a question to you. When someone is a senior in high school do they really have to know what they want to do for the rest of their life? Because if you ask me, that just seems daunting, the same way thinking of eternity gives me the eebey geebeys. Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t think I, or any other 16, 17, or 18 year old has to have it all figured out.

I think now’s the time to embrace ourselves and cherish every moment we have with the ones we love. We shouldn’t be spending our time and energy getting stressed out over our next essay, exam or the boy who “supposedly” thinks your hot.

At this time in my life, I have decided to stop playing soccer (because I stopped loving it), to work hard to complete my associates degree by the time I graduate from high school, to spend my time working and making money so I don’t have to rely soley on my parents for my wants and needs, and to strengthen old bonds and make time to create new connections with the right people.

I know that I have different priorities than lots of other teenagers, but I’m okay with that and I’m ready to embrace this short time I have left before I am an adult who has real worries and responsibilities. I want to stop wishing for a boyfriend, and start praying that God will prepare me to be the best wife. I want to stop procrastinating my homework. I want to make time for the people who are important to me. To show love by action, and not just words. All of these things are possible, and I suggest you think of ways you could better yourself, because it really affects one’s happiness.

Let’s stop asking “what do you want to be when you grow up” and instead, think of all the things we can be now so that when we’re grown up and get asked “what are you?”, we can answer confidently, “happy.”

The Happiness Project no.2 // Health & Happiness Tips

Dear blogging friends,

Ever feel like some days aren’t as productive, fun, positive, nutritious or heart-warming as others? Well don’t worry, I know the feeling! And I am here to give you a few helpful tips on how to turn those gloomy days into ones that are sure to have you smiling from the inside out. The Happiness Project no. 2 presents….. Health & Happiness tips.

After writing my first post in The Happiness Project last week (read it here), I did a lot of praying, cleansing, thinking and trusting (all with a few tears involved). Now I can say that I have come to terms with the season my life is in, a season of silence. A season of seeking. And a season of trusting in God.

Although I have never struggled in the past with having moments of uncertainty, or days where my mind gets quickly exhausted, I am now learning to work through the season God has graciously gifted to me. I will admit, I have a lot on my plate; with a college math class, high school work, working on the weekends, and still trying to balance a social life and make time for myself and God. But, just because it’s hard, doesn’t mean I am supposed to give up or be discouraged. I believe I am exactly where God wants me right now, and I decided to accept the challenge of finding happiness in the season that I am in; that seems lonely and dark.

Please keep in mind, these tips are simple, everyday changes that are easy to incorporate into your daily routine, and make a world of difference! Also, I’m sorry for the multitude of  liquids that I’ve written about, but they truly have wonderful health benefits.

Tip #1

Start your day off with a glass of lemon infused ice water

It helps hydrate your body first thing in the morning, rejuvenates your digestive tract, cleanses your liver, promotes clearer and brighter skin due to the Vitamin C, and is great for natural weight loss. Plus, it tastes yummy!

Tip #2

Open your blinds and live in natural light

Natural daylight is proven to make you happier and more energized, not to mention it makes for great photo lighting.

Tip #3

Light a candle

Whenever I light a scented candle, especially aromatherapy candles, I am instantly revitalized by the smell they leave lingering, and my mood is affected.

Tip #4

Drink a smoothie

On this day, I blended up banana, tangerine, frozen strawberries, blueberries, kale, chia seeds, almond butter, natural protein powder and almond milk for a delicious breakfast. Smoothies (depending on their ingredients) are packed with wholesome ingredients that are meant to boost your digestion, metabolism and overall well-being and health. I love drinking them in the morning for the perfect jam-packed energy drink.

Tip #5

Be productive- clean your room

I always feel better about my day once I can do something productive that I can physically see. When my room is clean, my life seems more put-together!

Tip #6

Drink some green juice

Green juice is another great liquid that is filled with fortifying nutrients and vitamins that cleanse the body from the inside out. On this day I juiced carrots, celery, baby kale and regular kale, an apple, two tangerines, half of a lemon and a piece of ginger.

Tip #7

Get creative!

Who cares if your art isn’t good enough to go in a gallery, just paint, draw or doodle your heart out for your own enjoyment. It is a great stress reliever when you have an extra moment in your day. I am currently working on bible journaling, and this is my first watercolor page I experimented on. Not the best, but I like the authentic look it has.

Tip #8

Sip some tea

loovvveeee me some good tea, and on top of the yummy taste it also has many health benefits. On this day, I was sipping on classic green tea, which is great for clear skin, a healthy digestive tract and a sharp mind.

 

Tip #9

Take time to get ready in the morning

I love having plenty of time in the morning to get ready for the day. It makes me feel put-together and gives me a great foundation for the rest of my day. Take time for yourself, listen to good music, and find time to feel truly beautiful each day.

The Happiness Project no. 1 // Food Matters

Happy 2016 friends!

Year after year, people all around the world make countless New Year’s resolutions; whether they are to live a healthier lifestyle, exercise more, be more inspired, or more organized, and the list goes on…

But if we really think about the end goal of a New Year’s resolution, the theme seems to simply be happiness. Because everyone (or at least the vast majority of us) just want to be happy in this life.  And there’s no problem with setting extreme goals for yourself, like going to the gym everyday, but such resolutions are not entirely necessary (or practical).

I’ve decided to create a series called The Happiness Project, beginning this month (January), and hopefully continuing until the end of 2016. In this series of blog posts, I will talk about a variety of topics; including relaxation tips, DIY’s, how to use your time effectively and how to be more confident (just to name a few). My end goal of this project is to inspire you, my reader, by thinking outside of the box and hopefully encouraging more happiness all around!

I know this introduction is getting a bit lengthy, but please bare with me.. The reason I decided to start The Happiness Project at this time is because my spirits have been feeling a bit blue lately with the depths of winter upon us and school in full swing. Especially these last few days, on the return from a great winter break, I feel myself quickly slipping into a colorless trance, where creativity is scarce. My soul is yearning for sunshine and summertime, but my mind and body are stuck in a valley of fog, and what seems like eternal school work that clouds my thoughts. But, all thanks to our God, I was able to come up with this project that will hopefully lift my gloomy spirits and help spark some inspiration in you as well (especially if you can relate to the way this January is making me feel).

With no further blabbering, I present to you my first topic in The Happiness Project

Food matters

For months now, I have wanted to eat a clean diet, cutting out unnecessary sugar and carbohydrates; but I just couldn’t bring myself to make such a large lifestyle change. However, when my unclear skin began quickly progressing and becoming a large hinderance to both my confidence and my happiness, I couldn’t wait another second to try out my last hope of clear skin without using harsh medications. I made the choice to eat a gluten, sugar and dairy-free diet, and let me tell you, I could’t be happier!

Why people with acne-prone skin shouldn’t eat gluten, dairy and sugar-

Sugar is made of two simpler sugars that are stuck together: fructose and glucose. Sugar is one of the worst things you can consume when you’re struggling with acne because of the fructose that it contains, which literally feeds the bacteria that a pimple is made of. This causes an extreme increase of pimple production and growth.

On the other hand, gluten acts as a gut inflammatory substance when it’s consumed, meaning that it causes an increase of bacteria growth and build-up in the body, and at times it’s nasty qualities are reflected onto the skin which make for unpleasant irritation and pimple growth.

And last but not least, dairy should not be consumed when dealing with acne because of the high levels of hormones that are found in animal bi-products, such as cheese, milk, yogurt and cream. In one’s body, these hormones, such as estrogen, throw our own natural hormones off balance by giving us more of that hormone than we need. The hormones in dairy have been known to increase growth of body parts, such as breasts, on both women and men, and boost the production of acne, along with many other bad effects on the human body.

My experience

I have been eating this way for one week so far (I know, not very long), and have already seen drastic results. My skin, during a time of near desperation, and finding absolutely nothing to help it, has finally began to look drastically clearer with much less production of acne. In addition to healthier looking skin, my digestive system has also found this new diet to be soothing, decreasing occasional tummy aches and the feeling of being overly-full.

Of course, before cutting these foods out of my diet, I was hesitant for the reason that it would be hard, or tempting, to resist them. But, I was entirely mistaken, and so far I’ve had no problems staying away from gluten, sugar and dairy products. Instead, I feel better than ever, and I’m never left with the gross (almost guilty) feeling I used to get after eating crap-filled foods. If you’re contemplating going for a cleaner diet, I can only encourage you, and say that there are countless benefits from changing something so minor in the scheme of life.

Throughout my experience of eating clean so far, I have to say that one of the biggest things I’ve come to learn is that my happiness should not rely on food at all. Before I made the switch, I was heavily reliant on processed or sugary foods to make me feel satisfied as a person, but now I’m happy to say that I am starting to find my joy in places other than my dessert! It sounds funny, but it is important that we don’t find too much enjoyment from our food, because I want my happiness to come from God, not some materialistic thing that pollutes my body which I was kindly given by my creator.

(I will be doing weekly updates on the progress of my skin and health after being on my diet for a longer amount of time!)

To give you a bit of background on my skin, I have struggled with acne for a good three and a half years now due to hormones, and mostly my heredity. I am on a natural skincare routine regimen, using only 100% natural cleanser, exfoliator, toner, spot treatment, serum and moisturizer. I have also completely transformed the way I eat; being gluten, dairy and sugar-free. I have been seeing slight improvements over the short time of my new routine, but I’m very hopeful for future drastic changes in my skin’s health (I will keep you posted).

New Year’s Eve Lookbook // 2 & 3

Dear friends,

Today I am bringing to you my last blog post of 2015. What?!? Yes. 2016 is upon us and I cannot wait to start a fresh year with better blog posts and new ambitions!

Look #2

I decided to sport a very New Year’s Eve appropriate sequined royal blue dress to ring in the new year. I paired the dress with a dark blue lace bralette, a gold layered necklace and classic black pumps. The back of this dress is my favorite part because of it’s deep V cut, giving the dress much more character. I kept my makeup quite neutral, using nudes, bold brows and thick lashes, in order to keep the focus on the dress. Although this look is relatively dressy, it would be more than wearable on New Year’s Eve where you are sure to be the bell of the ball.

 

Look #3

Here I wanted to show a simple black dress that would be perfect for your New Year’s Eve party. I chose this particular one because of the intricate back, detailed with black eyelash lace, and high neckline. As an example of how to style the dress, I draped a plaid blanket scarf around my neck and left both ends hanging down (which is completely optional). I wore the same gold necklace to dress it up, but swapped out my black heels for a pair of nude stilettos. I kept my hair and makeup very simple, with a half bun and nude makeup. This look is very versatile; whether you are going out to a fancy party, or staying in with a group of friends.
